Artie prided himself on being a very independent person in spite of the chair. It had been him and the chair for almost ten years at this point. For a while it had been him, the chair and Tina. Then it had been him, the chair and Brittany. Then it had been him and the chair all on their own again. Now it was him, the chair and Kurt.
He had been as shocked as anyone when he and Kurt had started dating in Artie's final year of high school and Kurt's year off before going to university. Kurt and Blaine had broken up in a painful, messy way. There had been lots of screaming and then one week Blaine didn't show up at the Glee movie night and Kurt looked like he had been run over by a mack truck; he had even showed up in a pair of old jeans and a baggy hoodie.
Just over a month later Artie had asked Kurt out to the movies and the rest, so they say, was history.
Except for the bits about long discussions when it came to personality and how they came together.
But in spite of it all it was a pretty smooth, relatively un-bumpy road.
They had their moments of being unsure. They weighed more heavily on Artie's side. He was nervous Kurt would leave him for an able-bodied man, even though Kurt assured him time and time again that he wouldn't. It was a concern that Artie had about everyone. That they would eventually leave him behind because he, in some ways, couldn't keep up with them.
Kurt had stuck by him during some of his truly painful and embarrassing moments which quelled Artie's fears by a significant margin. And the fears were disappearing more and more with each passing day.
Artie rolled into the living room of the Hummel-Hudson household where he had been told Kurt was. He smiled at the sight of his boyfriend sprawled over his couch, on the phone with someone, Mercedes most likely, watching a movie and making comments as they likely watched the same movie over the phone. Mercedes had relocated to Boston to go to school.
“'Cedes I need to go, my incredibly sexy jailbait-esque boyfriend just arrived.” He paused a moment before rolling his eyes with a laugh. “Love you too.”
Artie grinned when Kurt sat up. “I'm jailbait, huh?”
“Just barely.”
Artie pulled on Kurt's arm until they kissed before Artie drew back. “Cradle robber.”
Kurt smiled a little. “Ready for some movies?”
“Before we get started I need to go to the bathroom.”
Kurt nodded absently and trailed behind Artie as the boy pushed his wheelchair towards the stairs leading to the upper level. The both of them couldn't fit into the downstairs bathroom. And even though Artie protested sometimes Kurt knew he liked the security of Kurt being there to help.
Putting the breaks on the chair, Artie lifted an arm and Kurt hooked it around his shoulders while Artie took hold of the bannister and pulled. When he jolted forward Kurt moved quickly and moved his other arm under Artie's knees to hold him and carry him up the stairs.
“You know you really don't--”
“Not this again, I love you, okay? I'm here to help you even when you don't need it so shut up.”
They made their way into the bathroom and Kurt closed the door with his foot before helping Artie rest on the edge of the bathtub. Kurt locked the door and then made his way back to Artie, who had managed to undo his belt and Kurt smiled in a way that was dangerously predatory as he worked Artie's pants open and down. It took a bit more work with the boxers but they were off without much of a fuss.
Kurt eased Artie onto the toilet and without prompting nudged and held Artie's legs open while politely averting his eyes as Artie relieved himself. When Artie finished Kurt helped him clean and redress without hesitation.
“I don't know why you're so sweet with me. No one else I dated helped,” Artie said as Kurt washed his hands.
“I love you.” Kurt's reply was simple as he kissed Artie's mouth. “I enjoy helping you. It makes me feel close to you. I feel honoured you trust me so much to allow me to help.”
Artie leveled a gaze at Kurt before brushing a hand over his cheek. “Thank you, Kurt. And, I love you too.”
